The MA in Special Education, concentration in Autism provides students with a deep dive into the theories, strategies and interventions used in autism education, without leading to professional educator licensure or certification. This program is ideal for current teachers, paraeducators, counselors and more who are passionate about making a difference in the lives of exceptional children and adults.
Throughout the program, you will develop a foundation in best practices for supporting students with ASD, covering key topics such as:
- Autism Spectrum Disorder: Understanding the neurological and developmental aspects of ASD and its impact on behavior, communication and learning.
- Educational Strategies and Interventions: Effective instructional techniques, behavior management strategies and the use of evidence-based interventions for students with autism.
- Assessment and Evaluation: Tools and methods for assessing students with ASD to create individualized education plans and evaluate progress.
- Collaboration and Family Support: The importance of working with families, other professionals and community organizations to foster a supportive learning environment where children can learn and thrive.
After completing the culminating practicum, which reflects of the standards and competencies outlined by the Council for Exceptional Children, you’ll be prepared to apply a range of strategies and interventions that can be adapted to diverse educational settings. This non-certification program does not lead to state licensure or certification but is a valuable credential for those who want to specialize in autism education and make a lasting impact in the field.

Curriculum
A student must complete a minimum of 33 credit hours and complete a comprehensive exam. Students must also earn a GPA of at least 3.00 on all courses in the program, with no grade below a C. Please note that courses are subject to change.

Admission
Admission to the Master of Arts in Special Education, concentration in Autism degree program requires the following:
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution
- Transcripts from all institutions attended
- Undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or a 3.0 or higher in a completed graduate degree program
- Statement of purpose
- Completed UA Graduate School application
- Three letters of recommendation
- Recommendation letters must be from current and former professors and/or supervisory personnel knowledgeable of the applicant’s academic and professional capabilities for all College of Education programs that lead to professional certification
Applications are accepted for students to begin coursework in the Fall semester.
This program does not lead to certification or licensure.
