Have you considered the EdS in Special Education (Gifted certification)? Applicants who hold Class A certification in a teaching field are encouraged to check out the program and apply for Fall 2025 admission! Admission

Applications are accepted each semester for this program. To complete your application package, you’ll need to submit unofficial transcripts from all institutions attended, three letters of recommendation, a statement of purpose, and a Graduate School application.

  • A master’s degree from an accredited institution with a valid Alabama Class A professional educator certificate
    • A valid bachelor’s level professional educator certificate in a teaching field is required if the Alabama Class A professional educator certificate is in an area of instructional support
  • 3.0 or higher in completed graduate degree program

A transcript evaluation is required before admission.

All prospective certification-only students should contact Dawn Bryant (debryant@ua.edu), Graduate Admissions and Certification Coordinator in the College of Education, before beginning an application.

Master’s Level Gifted P-12 Certification Only Application Instructions:

  • Begin your graduate application through the UA Graduate School. When you reach the “Program of Study” page, section “Academic Program” follow these instructions:
    • For “Program Type” select Distance (Online/Blended/Gadsden)
    • For “Select degree type” use the drop-down menu to select Non-Degree
    • For “Select course of study” use the drop-down menu to select Non-Degree Education Student Certification
    • A new drop-down menu will appear for “Select your area of focus, if applicable” – use the drop-down menu to select Special Education
    • For “Campus” select Distance Learning
