Responding to a need in health care: a new Master of Science in Nursing, with a Nurse Educator concentration.

Given the increasing shortage of nurse faculty, there is a demand for individuals with a passion for teaching to meet that need in schools of nursing, hospitals, public health agencies and other settings. Nurse educators have the flexibility to adapt curriculum and teaching methods in response to innovation in nursing science and ongoing changes in the practice environment. Applications for this program are accepted for Fall, Spring and Summer semester starts.

Curriculum

Students in this program will complete 35 credit hours and can choose to pursue the program either full-time or part-time. Please note that courses are subject to change.

  • NUR 506: Clinical Foundations – will be taught Fall 2024 for the first time
  • NUR 531: Nursing Faculty Roles and Responsibilities
  • NUR 576: Teaching and Learning Strategies – will be taught Summer 2025 for the first time 
  • NUR 577: Academic Immersion  – will be taught Fall 2025 for the first time
  • NUR 578: Clinical Immersion Practicum  – will be taught Spring 2026 for the first time

Admission

Applications and all required documentation must be submitted by:

  • April 1 for Fall semester
  • September 1 for Spring semester
  • January 1 for Summer semester

Admission Requirements

Requirements are consistent with those of the Graduate School. Applicants will be considered on a competitive basis and are encouraged to contact the Capstone College of Nursing Coordinator of Graduate Student Services.

The following are requirements for admission:

  • For regular admission, a grade point average of at least 3.0 overall (based on a 4.0 grading scale) or 3.0 for the last 60 semester hours of undergraduate work.
  • Baccalaureate degree in nursing from an accredited school of nursing.
  • Current unencumbered RN licensure in the United States. View the states from which the Capstone College of Nursing currently accepts applications for admission.

Final admission is contingent upon drug and background screen results deemed acceptable by appropriate University officials.

MSN/Nurse Educator Application Process:

  • Begin your graduate application at the UA Graduate School.
    • For “Program Type” select Distance (Online/Blended/Gadsden).
    • For “Campus” select Distance Learning.
  • Request official transcripts following the Graduate School’s transcript instructions.
  • Submit supporting documents:
    • Statement of Purpose following the Graduate School’s instructions.
    • Resume or curriculum vitae. 
    • Contact information for two references – The references should be professionals who can provide insight regarding your potential for success in the master’s program. The Graduate School will contact these references via e-mail.
    • Copy of active RN license from every state in which you are licensed. A screenshot of your online verification is sufficient. Note: Licensure must be maintained throughout the program.
    • Interview – Applicants who meet all other requirements will receive instructions on this step once the application is complete and submitted with all of the above requirements.
