Program Overview

The MA in Educational Psychology (School Psychometry) combines educational psychology with psychometric assessment techniques, equipping students with the skills to conduct psychological evaluations, interpret test results and develop strategies to support students’ academic and emotional growth. Upon completion of all requirements, eligible students can earn an Alabama Class A School Psychometry certification, preparing them for careers in schools, educational consulting and other specialized fields.

This comprehensive graduate program is designed for individuals seeking to deepen their understanding of human development, learning processes and psychological assessment in educational settings. This program blends theoretical foundations in psychology with practical application in the school environment, preparing graduates to work as school psychologists, assess students’ educational and psychological needs and implement evidence-based interventions.

Students in this program will learn foundational principles in school psychology, focusing on learning, cognition and psychometric theory, alongside skills in statistical methods and psychometric assessment. They will also gain practical experience in counseling as well as cognitive, academic and social-behavior assessment. This culminates in a hands-on internship for students to apply their knowledge in real-world educational settings. Graduates will emerge as adept practitioners capable of making a meaningful difference in the educational and psychological development of students, ensuring they receive the support needed to succeed in school and beyond.

Upon completion, eligible students can pursue an Alabama Class A School Psychometry certification, qualifying them to assess and support the diverse needs of students across various educational settings.

Curriculum

The EdS program consists of up to 69 credit hours. Previous coursework may be applied to meet degree requirements. Student transcripts will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis to determine the exact courses required. Please note that courses are subject to change.

Admission

Admission to the Master of Arts in Educational Psychology (School Psychometry) degree program requires the following:

  • A bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution
  • Official transcripts from all institutions attended
  • A valid bachelor’s or master’s level professional educator certificate in a teaching field or a valid master’s level professional educator certificate in an area of instructional support
  • Two years of acceptable, professional P-12 educational experience
  • Undergraduate degree GPA of 3.0 or a 3.0 GPA or higher in a completed graduate degree program
  • Statement of purpose
  • Completed UA Graduate School application
  • Completed requirements for fingerprinting/background clearance
  • Three letters of recommendation
    • Recommendation letters must be from current and former professors and/or supervisory personnel knowledgeable of the applicant’s academic and professional capabilities for all College of Education programs that lead to professional certification

Students may begin the program in the fall.

This program leads to Alabama Class A certification in School Psychometry (K-12). If you reside or intend to seek professional licensure outside of the state of Alabama, please review the requirements for that state prior to applying to this program.

The programs listed in the current UA Graduate Catalog that lead to Alabama Class A and Class AA professional certificates may be altered to meet certification standards adopted by the Alabama State Board of Education.
