This 12-credit-hour program builds in-demand skills in trauma-informed social work practice, preparing you to navigate complex systems, engage families deliver evidence-based care. The Child Welfare Graduate Certificate prepares students and professionals to lead and advocate within complex child welfare systems. Through a focused 12-credit curriculum, you’ll build expertise in trauma-informed practice, family engagement and case management while developing the leadership skills needed to influence policy and improve outcomes for children and families.

Designed for Master of Social Work (MSW) students and individuals working in or adjacent to human services fields, this certificate emphasizes real-world application and system-level thinking — equipping you to move from awareness to action and become a catalyst for meaningful change.

Curriculum

Flexible Pathways for Professional Growth

Whether you are advancing your current role, exploring graduate study or expanding into a new area of practice, this graduate certificate provides a flexible and accessible way to build expertise without committing to a full degree program.

All 12 credit hours earned in this certificate program may be used directly toward the completion of the MSW program. The overlap of the certificate with the associated degree program is intentional, as the certificate provides a level of focus within the MSW degree in the absence of degree concentrations.

SW 505* Social Work Practice with Individuals and Families or SW 512** Advanced Generalist Practice I: Components of Social Work Practice
SW 508 Social Work Practice in Child Welfare
SW 516 Trauma-Informed Social Work Practice
SW 509 Models and Methods of Social Work Practice with Children and Adolescents in Mental Health

Admission

Application Deadlines

Certificate applications are accepted on a rolling basis for fall entry. Applicants can be degree-seeking or non-degree-seeking students. Applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution, and all undergraduate majors are welcome with no specific course prerequisites for enrollment.

Applicants must have the following qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution
Academic transcripts from all institutions attended
One letter of recommendation
Resume
Statement of purpose, which should address your interest in the graduate certificate in 1-2 double-spaced pages. Include a title and reference page, following APA requirements.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who should apply?

Ideal for MSW students and professionals working in or entering child welfare or human services roles. This certificate will help students develop the knowledge and skills needed to support children and families while strengthening connections between social work and fields such as anthropology, psychology, criminal justice and human development.

There is a high demand for trained child welfare professionals due to workforce shortages and ongoing challenges in foster care, permanency planning and family services.

Is this program fully online?

Yes — this certificate is 100% online. SW 505/SW 512 will require live, virtual participation in skills labs on select Saturdays.

Does this certificate lead to licensure?

No. The certificate does not independently lead to professional licensure.

Can I apply this toward an MSW?

Yes — 100% of the credits can be applied to the Master of Social Work degree. SW 505 or SW 512 is a first-term requirement for its respective MSW program, while SW 508, SW 509 and SW 516 fulfill the three elective degree requirements.
