Program Overview
Develop specialized knowledge and skills to build a strong foundational understanding of the history, arts and technologies of the book. Through a combination of studio and academic coursework, students enrolled in UA’s 100% online graduate certificate in Book Arts will acquire knowledge of the social and historical impact of books and gain an appreciation for the interaction of form and function in book production.

Obtain a Strong Foundational Understanding of the Book
Add a competitive edge to your skill set by integrating material book studies into outside research, creative specializations or professional practice. As a complement to a primary field of study or work experience, this certificate provides the expertise necessary to produce and critically examine creative book work within a historical context and contemporary framework.
Potential students include librarians, teachers, artists, archivists, writers, community arts educators and arts outreach professionals.
Live, interactive classes are 100% online and taught by the same award-winning faculty who teach in UA’s on-campus MFA in Book Arts, the oldest program of its kind in the nation. This certificate may be combined with a Master of Library and Information Studies or taken as a stand-alone certificate to complement other graduate degrees.

Curriculum
Students complete a total of 15 hours for the graduate certificate in Book Arts. Six credit hours are required studio courses, and 9 credit hours are selected from the approved list of electives above. No prerequisites are required.
Students are required to build a portfolio of coursework as a capstone project they will submit in their final semester. A summation statement by the student about the portfolio and its relevance to their professional, academic and/or creative goals is also required. The portfolio will be reviewed and assessed by the Book Arts faculty in a one-on-one session with the student.

Admission
Applications are accepted from:
- Bachelor’s degree graduates with a 3.0 minimum GPA
- Students pursuing graduate work in allied disciplines
- Graduate degree holders in related disciplines
Three hours of transfer credit is allowed if advisor approved.
