Time management is difficult for everyone – students, employees and parents. It’s even more difficult when you’re trying to juggle multiple roles! Use the following tips to help organize your time:
- Budget your time – Plan on spending an adequate amount of study time per class. A good rule is to spend two to three times the number of credit hours on study time. A 3-credit-hour undergraduate course might require six hours of weekly study time, while a 3-credit-hour graduate course might require nine hours of weekly study time.
- Track your time – Keep a daily, weekly and monthly calendar. Track where your time is spent and eliminate time-wasting activities such as watching too much television.
- Set goals – Dedicate a reasonable amount of time to each assignment. Break big tasks into smaller steps so that you’re not overwhelmed.
- Make lists – Create a list and prioritize tasks. You may not finish your list each day, but it will help keep you focused. It can be as simple as using a daily planner or an app such as Evernote.
- Create a buffer – Set a deadline for yourself a day or two before the actual due date so you aren’t scrambling at the last minute to complete an assignment. Even with excellent planning, life happens. Finish assignments early in case of something unexpected, like getting sick or working overtime.
- Multi-task – If you know you will be somewhere for a certain amount of time, such as walking on a treadmill or waiting at the doctor’s office, use that opportunity to go over your class notes.
