More Information About the Application Process

UA Online Admission Requirements

UA Online applicants must meet general admission requirements as outlined below. Some programs — specifically Food and Nutrition, Mechanical Engineering, New College LifeTrack and UA Early College — have additional admission criteria. Please contact UA Online at online@ua.edu before submitting an application to any of these programs.

General Admission Requirements

  • Admission may be granted to non-graduates of high school who are 18 years of age and have been out of high school for a minimum of one year. Applicants must score a minimum of 510 on the old General Educational Development (GED) Test or a minimum of 150 on the current GED test and submit acceptable ACT or SAT scores. Applicants 23 years of age and older are required to score a minimum 510 on the old GED test or a minimum of 150 on the current GED test. In addition, they may be required to submit ACT or SAT scores for advising purposes. More information may be found at catalog.ua.edu.
  • If you completed high school more than four years before your application date, you must have had a 2.5 high school GPA.
  • If you completed high school less than four years before your application date, you must have had a 3.0 high school GPA.
  • No ACT/SAT scores are required if high school graduation or GED was more than four years before your application date. If graduation was less than four years before your application date, you must submit official test scores.
  • You must have a 2.0 GPA on any college-level coursework attempted. If you will have earned fewer than 24 credit hours (36 quarter hours) at the time of your application to the University, have your high school transcript and ACT or SAT score(s) sent to The University of Alabama. Technical and military credit cannot be counted as transfer credit.

Application Type

On the second page of the application, you will select one of the following application types. If you have questions about which application type is appropriate for you, please contact an admissions representative.

Freshmen Admission

Students who have earned a high school diploma and have not earned college credit other than during high school or the summer immediately following high school graduation should select First Time Freshmen under Application Type.

Transfer Student Admission

Students seeking to transfer to UA from other colleges should select Transfer Student under Application Type.

Readmission (Previous UA Students)

If you have previously attended The University of Alabama, you must apply for readmission (follow the link and scroll down to the Readmit, Transient & Postgraduate section for details). On the undergraduate application, on the first page of questions, be sure to answer “Yes” when asked if you have ever enrolled in classes as a degree-seeking student at UA. There is a nonrefundable $15 readmission application fee.

Post-Graduate Admission

Students who have previously earned a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution and wish to pursue a second bachelor’s degree should select Post-Graduate (Degree Seeking) under Application Type.

Non-Degree-Seeking Admission

If you are interested in enrolling in undergraduate courses without earning a degree, you may apply as a non-degree-seeking student. Under this status, you may take up to 12 credit hours. You must select the Non-Degree Taking Undergraduate Coursework application type instead of Bachelor’s when filling out the first page of the application and on the second page of the application under Application Type. Taking non-degree coursework will not make you admissible to the degree program if you do not meet the minimum admission requirements. Non-degree-seeking students are not eligible for federal financial aid.

New College LifeTrack

Students seeking to complete requirements toward an interdisciplinary major for bachelor’s degrees should select New College LifeTrack on the second page of questions in the application, under Application Type. The New College LifeTrack program requires additional admission criteria. Visit the How to Apply section of our New College LifeTrack website to learn more.

UA Early College

Students seeking to enroll in UA courses online or on campus while still in high school should select UA Early College on the second page of questions in the application, under Application Type. This program requires additional admission criteria. Visit the Steps to Take section of our UA Early College website to learn more.

Within 48 hours of submission, you should receive an email with your Campus Wide Identification Number (CWID). It is important that you remember this number. It is your campus ID and will be required in future university business and academic interactions.

Transcript Submission

Official transcripts from all institutions attended must be submitted. Failure to list all institutions attended on the admission application is grounds for administrative withdrawal of the application. Official transcripts should be sent to the addresses below.
