Curriculum
The Instructional Technology program consists of 48 credit hours of coursework and 18 credit hours of dissertation research. The courses for the program are offered in an online format. Students will also complete a comprehensive exam in the form of an electronic portfolio. Please note that courses are subject to change.

Applications for the upcoming cohort of students in Fall 2026 should be submitted by the priority deadline of March 1, 2026.
Admission Requirements:
- Meet minimum UA Graduate School admission criteria
- A master’s degree in any field
- A current curriculum vita or resume
- A writing sample
PhD Instructional Leadership – Instructional Technology Application:
- Begin your graduate application through the UA Graduate School
- For “Program Type” select Distance (Online/Blended/Gadsden)
- For “Select degree type” use the drop-down menu to select Doctoral
- For “Select course of study” use the drop-down menu to select Instructional Leadership PhD
- Note: Please ensure that you select the appropriate program name and degree type from the list.
- A new drop-down menu will appear for “Select your concentration, if applicable” – use the drop-down menu to select Instructional Technology
- For the “Enter your area of focus, if applicable” text box, leave blank or type “None”
- For “Campus” select Distance Learning
- For “Entry Term” select Fall
- Request official transcripts following the Graduate School’s transcript instructions
- Submit supporting documents:
- Statement of Purpose following the Graduate School’s instructions
- Resume or curriculum vitae
- Contact information for three professional references who can provide insight regarding your potential for success in the doctoral program. The Graduate School will contact these references via e-mail.
- Writing Sample – The writing sample provides an opportunity for the applicant to demonstrate their ability to produce doctoral-level writing. Applicants have two options for completing the Writing Sample:
- An academic or professional writing sample written by the applicant within the last three years that provides evidence of the applicant’s writing ability.
- A five-page essay describing an issue or current trend in instructional technology. The essay should be thesis-driven, present ideas clearly, and use evidence effectively. The sample should include evidence from the literature and should be cited appropriately using APA 7th edition and include a reference page.
