Enrollment and Refund Policy

Online semester-based courses

The last day to drop a UA Online course and receive a refund follows the regular University schedule for campus courses. Refer to Student Account Services for dates.

Grading Policy

Distance learning students are subject to and have the same access to academic calendars, grading policies and refund policies as on-campus students. Refer to the registrar’s website for grading policies and contact information.

Change of Curriculum Process

Currently enrolled main campus and distance learning students may submit a one-time, permanent request to change their campus type.

Campus type change requests must be received before the last day to register for the full fall or spring term. During the summer, the request must be received before the term registration deadline. Campus code change requests are reviewed for future terms only after the full-term registration deadline has passed.

Current students

  • Currently enrolled undergraduate students must complete a change of curriculum form. A UA Online success coach will reach out regarding the request before it is processed.
  • Currently enrolled graduate students must contact their academic department to discuss a request for a change of campus type. Departments that approve a change of campus request must then contact UA Online: online@ua.edu

Newly admitted students

Newly admitted students without attempted hours must work through admissions to request that their campus type be updated.

  • Undergraduate students must complete the application update form in their application portal to change their campus type.
  • Graduate students must contact the Graduate School regarding their application status.

International Students

  • Under Alabama law (Act 2011-535), only prospective students with U.S. citizenship; U.S. permanent residency (green card); a documented, lawful immigration status that allows for study; or evidence of lawful presence may apply for one of our programs.
  • Unfortunately, our online degree programs are not offered outside of the United States.

Additional Details

  • Not all main campus majors, minors and concentrations are available through distance learning. See a full list of degrees offered by UA Online.
  • Some majors require a specific GPA and/or prerequisites.
  • Active holds on your student account will delay the request and may result in a denied request.
  • Campus code changes for the current term cannot be processed once a grade has been earned, including a grade of W.
  • You may lose main campus scholarships if your campus type is changed to distance learning. Consult with the Office of Financial Aid and/or Office of Scholarships before requesting the change; however, approved campus change students may be eligible to apply for UA Online scholarships future terms.
  • You will no longer have access to all student activity privileges. You will still have access to all academic resources (UA Libraries, the Writing Center, etc.).
  • You will no longer be able to register for main campus classes once the change is made. As a distance learner, if you register for main campus course sections, you will be contacted, and the distance learner code and tuition rate may be removed from your record.
