Dr. Demitrius T. Barksdale’s journey has been one of dedication and resilience. After earning his bachelor’s degrees in Psychology and Sociology and a master’s in Mental Health Counseling from The University of Alabama, Dr. Barksdale pursued a doctorate in Higher Education Administration through The University of Alabama Online, graduating in May 2024.
Dr. Barksdale is a first-generation college student from the small town of Brewton, Alabama. He excelled academically in high school, graduating with a GPA greater than a 4.0, and was actively engaged with his community. During his time as an undergraduate however, like many students, he faced challenges that led to depression and a drastic decline in his grades. “There is no blueprint or framework; being a first generation is pioneering, and it’s weighty,” he said. This struggle inspired a change, leading him to focus on mental health both personally and professionally. He switched his major in undergrad from Math Education to Psychology during his second semester as a junior, later focusing on mental health counseling, such to help “other people who are struggling,” he said, “just like me.”
Dr. Barksdale expressed his gratitude toward Dr. Joy Burnham, College of Education professor in Counselor Education and a senior associate dean, for her consistent guidance through pivotal moments in his academic journey. From changing his major as an undergraduate student to ultimately earning his doctorate, Dr. Burnham was a steadfast advocate, serving as his dissertation committee chair. “What I’m trying to say about Dr. Burnham is, she has been my biggest advocate. Advocacy has become the theme of my life. It’s imperative to have someone advocate for you,” said Dr. Barksdale. “I believe I ended up at UA for a reason, and that Dr. Burnham was placed in my life for a reason. Now, I’m able to advocate for others, too.”
Dr. Barksdale’s academic journey, which spans three distinct fields of study, is a testament to his unique and multidisciplinary approach to education. “I was seeking a doctoral program that would allow me to integrate my knowledge from my bachelor’s degrees in Psychology and Sociology, and my master’s in Mental Health Counseling, in an organized manner to create opportunities for students and community members to grow holistically,” he said.
UA Online’s EdD in Higher Education Administration (Executive Cohort) program enabled Dr. Barksdale to develop a comprehensive skill set in curriculum and development, program development, organizational leadership, budgeting, grant writing and funding. “Pursuing a doctorate has to be a divine calling and purposeful embarkment. You must have a greater tie to the doctoral journey than just pursuing a degree alone. This is not something you just do, just for a hobby at all,” said Dr. Barksdale. “The experience was invaluable. I’m so glad it was hybrid because it allowed for a unique blend of in-person experiences, as well as time for me and my cohort members to reflect, process and do some work on our own.” He went on to add how well he liked the course discussions, “the faculty encouraged roundtable sessions where we could all sit down and engage in discourse about various topics or current events in higher education and beyond, as well as things we have read.”
Dr. Barksdale worked in the Culverhouse College of Business as the program manager for Student Professional Development and an adjunct professor. In the Fall 2024, he began his journey as full-time faculty for the department of psychology at UA. He emphasized the importance of pursuing diverse experiences, including degrees, that shape one’s desired path in life. “I always encourage my students to think about where they want their life to go, where they feel they’re called or led to go, and assess if they truly love what they desire to do, of if they are just in love with the idea of what they want to do. With this understanding, students should seek the experiences and the degrees that will allow them to have that experience,” he said.
Not only does Dr. Barksdale inspire his students, but he also embodies an entrepreneurial spirit. As the chief operating officer and co-founder of LEADingWell, an educational and holistic development and wellness consulting initiative, Dr. Barksdale channels his extensive experience and expertise into its mission. With over 15 years in education and holistic development and being a three-time Alabama grad, his journey is deeply intertwined with LEADingWell’s objectives. LEADingWell empowers individuals through conferences, webinars and community events focused on holistic development and leadership, echoing the themes of Dr. Barksdale’s dissertation.
Dr. Barksdale’s advice to students considering a degree through UA Online is to “do it scared.” By embracing fear and uncertainty, he believes students can build the confidence needed to overcome challenges and pursue their academic goals with determination.
