MLIS

This program boasts a proud history of educating and training librarians for service across the country. The curriculum will establish a solid foundation of the core principles of librarianship, while also providing the opportunity for you to tailor the coursework with electives that suit your interests and career goals.

MLIS + Archival Studies Concentration

The Archival Studies concentration prepares you for work with manuscripts, rare books, historical records and digital media. The program curriculum will equip you with a deep understanding of the theory and practice of preserving these artifacts for future generations.

MLIS + School Library Media Concentration

The School Library Media concentration prepares you for Alabama Class A Certification in School Library Media (or equivalent) and is designed to fit the schedule of a full-time educator. Graduates will be specifically taught to enhance and expand K-12 library and information environments to meet student needs.

Graduate Certificate in Archival Studies

In just 15 credit hours of online coursework, you can earn a graduate certificate in Archival Studies. Designed to enhance your understanding of the art of preserving rare books, manuscripts and other artifacts, this certificate can complement your education and career experience to provide a comprehensive foundation for the theory and practice of archival work.

EdS in Educational Leadership, concentration in School Library Media

The EdS in Educational Leadership with a concentration in School Library Media offers interdisciplinary instruction from the School of Library and Information Studies and the College of Education. The curriculum includes topics such as leading collaboration, outreach to diverse populations, cultural diversity and youth programming. You can tailor the coursework to your individual goals through electives to prepare yourself for your dream career in library and information environments.

PhD in Communication and Information Sciences

The PhD in Communication and Information Sciences allows you to pursue doctoral study related to library and information studies. The curriculum includes mass communication theory, cultural and critical theory, and quantitative, qualitative and humanistic research methods. Tailor the program to your goals by designing your program of study and dissertation around your interests under the guidance of your faculty advisor.

The Build on Bama tuition grant is for UA alumni or anyone who has been referred by a graduate of one of our online programs.

Bama Link

The Bama Link tuition grant is for faculty, staff and students of Alabama community colleges or other select out-of-state community colleges.

Back to Bama

The Back to Bama tuition grant is for former UA students who left UA more than a year ago without graduating.

For each grant, you must be in your first semester of one of our online programs and apply for the grant by the deadline, in addition to meeting the grant-specific requirements.

You Decide the Timeline

With few exceptions, our online degree programs are available in a work-at-your-own-pace format. Within each course, assignment deadlines vary, but you get to decide how many courses you want to take each semester to complete your degree. Undergraduate degree program completion times depend on how many hours you transfer in, but most students finish in three to six years. Most of our master’s programs can be completed in one to three years and doctoral programs in three to six years, according to your desired pace.
