Program Overview

The graduate certificate in Archiving and Preservation of Audiovisual Media aims to fill a niche in AV archiving programs. The certificate pairs an accredited Master of Library and Information Studies curriculum, focused on saving and storing digital information, with a skills-based curriculum in the preservation of audiovisual media.

Online Program Format

Preserving the Past, Powering the Future.

This program is an advanced study in managing and preserving a variety of archival materials. Graduates are better prepared to assist in preserving documentary heritage and in facilitating its local and broader access.

Candidates who complete the certificate will be qualified for work in cultural heritage institutions or institutions with data preservation needs that seek to hire individuals with strong subject expertise, coupled with expertise in managing and preserving audiovisual archival materials. Specialized memory, data management and cultural institutions (special libraries, museums and archives) often require that job candidates excel in their primary subject discipline (e.g., media history), while also possessing expertise in selecting, managing and preserving information.

Live, interactive classes are offered 100% online and taught by the same renowned faculty who teach in UA’s top-ranked MLIS program. This certificate may be combined with an MLIS or taken as a stand-alone certificate. Courses taken in the certificate can double-count towards the MLIS degree.

Curriculum

Students complete a total of 15 hours for the graduate certificate in Archiving and Preservation of Audiovisual Media. 12 credit hours are selected from required Archiving and Preservation of Audiovisual Media courses and 3 credit hours are from an approved list of electives.

Please note that courses are subject to change. No prerequisites are required for the courses in the certificate. Transfer credits are not allowed for the certificate.

Admission

Admission criteria:

Completed bachelor’s degree with a 3.0 minimum GPA
Statement of Purpose describing your experience and interest in audiovisual archiving

Applications are accepted from:

Students currently holding a bachelor’s degree
Students pursuing graduate work in library and information studies and allied disciplines (including, but not limited to, library and information studies, film and/or media studies, museum studies, history, English, anthropology and art history)
Students already possessing graduate degrees in related disciplines

Students enrolled in or possessing graduate degrees in disciplines outside of the humanities and social sciences will be considered on an individual basis. Emphasis is placed on the humanities and social sciences due to the subject knowledge that cultural heritage institutions typically require of their applicants.

Applications are accepted on a rolling basis throughout the year for fall or spring admission.
